In a bid to give IMP nightmares, here are my top 10s for each year of the '70s (a top 15 for 70/71). Not necessarily the songs I like now, but the songs I loved then, as a child and young teenager. I'd love to say that as a four-year-old (the earliest time I remember having favourite songs) I was into Van Morrison's Astral Weeks and little-known, early Sound of Philadelphia. Alas, be warned, I rather rated the likes of the Sweet, Gilbert O'Sullivan and Neil Diamond (and a whole lot of German "Schlager"). Do watch out for shock Leonard Cohen inclusion, though.

For weekly German charts: http://ki.informatik.uni-wuerzburg.de/~topsi/deutop20.html

I shudder to think that in 30 years time, my son will make similar lists including such classics as "Who Let The Dogs Out" and "Hey Baby". Altough I think the song that may really define his childhood is a Steely Dan album track called "Barrytown".

G-Man, is BW Stephenson a SA version of BA Robertson, or is your memory playing tricks?

Quite right. Lost my concentration there. Next time I shouldn't play my 70s MP3s when compiling such lists.

Great lists. But how could you leave out "My Dingaling," by Chuck Berry?
