He's scored 49 goals, he deserves to have the chance to get his fiftieth. It would be a symbolic achievement. You can't leave him stranded on 49, after the service he's given his country.

At some point, in a friendly - it's only a friendly, come on! - we'll get a penalty, and Sir Bobby can trot on, tuck it away, and get that 50th goal he so richly deserves.

I think Bobby banged in a couple in that ad - while his big brother was getting booked for that 'shirt pull'. Loved those 'Old Lions' commercials.

But who, exactly, is Beckham keeping out of the squad more worthy than he? Precisely no-one. Which is a fairly damning comment on the quality of English footballers at the moment.

Capello doesn't do sentiment. If that was what he was about, Beckham would have played the first half of the first friendly and then been told to forget it.

It would be fascinating to read a contemporaneously kept diary of Capello and Baldini's thoughts as they "settle" into the world of English football.

This week's Tottenham-Chelsea match would be worth a few pages on its own, and my sense is that the overall vibe would be somewhere between Tocqueville and Heart of Darkness.

has anyone seen the clips of beckham playing friendlies for LA galaxy that they are showing on sky sports news.

It's almost like he's playing a different sport now. I doubt that he's remotely near fitness.
