For reasons I can't quite place (at a guess, Cerys Matthews), I used to seriously dislike Catatonia.

However, upon hearing International Velvet today, I think I was being a bit harsh. It's pretty good stuff, this.

Luca Brasi, he sleeps with the fishes!

I liked 'em. Cerys Matthews' solo album, Cockahoop, is excellent.

Some good tunes on Way Beyond Blue actually, that was my favourite album of theirs.

The Welsh Sugarcubes, but not quite as good. Mo Einar, though, thankfully.

I could name a huge amount of worse bands. But now, right now, Catatonia are in that zone which says "Shite".

And that "Londinium" single didn't help.

What dalliance said. Way Beyond Blue has a some very good songs, and was a highly promising debut. International Velvet also has some good tracks on it. But it also has their death, in Mulder and Scully. Terrible, commercial, obvious crap, with an annoying hook.

What is Cerys up to these days, anyone know?

According to allmusic.com , she's moved to Nashville. Just like my parents.

Putting on an unconvincing Welsh accent won't help the cause.

yeah the accent was the most annoying thing. We all know she went to private school.

It's a bit of a week for bigging up critically unacclaimed 1998 albums from Wales isn't it?

I like International Velvet too - it struck me at the time as a kind of Oasis album for girls: lots of big stompy boozy anthems from a female perspective.

They were a very six-and-a-half out of ten band Catatonia, but they definitely had their moments.

Cerys is annoying and self-centered.
Way Beyond The Blue was a good album, but I agree with most of what's been said from there on in.

The one that really grated with me was Road Rage. Some decent singles. E10's Oasis comparison is pretty much spot on.
