Had to decide between a Spanish guy, an Italian guy and a Dutch guy for a job as manager of our sound studio.

So we decided on the Spanish guy because he had more commercial experience.

Now I just phoned the Italian guy at home to tell him the bad news, and he starts to cry. He's sobbing; I'm trying to talk him round to the positives of his application (of which there were plenty) but I could tell he wasn't really listening by then. Leaving me feeling like the worst kind of shit imaginable.

I tried placating him best I could, but there's only so much you can say. I ended up promising him the next job that comes up though.

There are so many people in the world who don't give a shit about work or anything else, it makes you just wanna grab hold of all those that do and give 'em all jobs.

I don't think I'll ever get used to this. I feel like shit.

Well, doing the hard part is a tough and unpleasant job all by itself - I've never done it myself but it doesn't take a genius to figure out that it'll end in tears as it did for you.

Someone had to get the chop and the guy will have to cope with it. Sad to say, but that's how it goes.

Think that’ll work if I ever get banned from OTF?

I don’t think you should feel bad about this. You can’t take care of everybody in this world.

Why did he cry, by the way? Was it because he hasn’t had a break in years and years? If he’s “only” been without a job for a few months, spontaneously I’d say he doesn’t seem the most stable lad to have employed, but it could just have been the drop, you know, perhaps there are many other things happening in his life at the same moment that he finally lost it.

If it's not an ignorant question, how did you get such a continentally-diverse selection of hopefuls?

Was the job a prize on 'Going For Gold'?

I think Italian guy was upset because he's been offered a customer-service job for a major international computer company, which he will now have to take. So the poor bastard now realises his future lies in some shitty call-centre in Amsterdam Z.O. for the intermediate period at least.

Enough to make the strongest man cry, let alone an Italian musician.
