Yesterday G-Teenager jumped into a swimming pool with his cellphone in the pocket. It's not working now, though the LCD screen has dried/demisted.

Anyway, is there anything we can do to make the thing work again, or is it permanently fucked?

It's almost certainly fucked.

I once dropped my mobile in a urinal. I fished it out, and, being drunk and a bit of a div, decided to run it under the tap to wash the piss off. It was only after I'd thoroughly cleaned it I realised what a fucking tool I'd been.

I was once told (by someone whose phone had dropped into the toilet bowl out of their shirt pocket) that the battery will almost certainly be useless, but all the other components can, in theory, return to as good as new if dried out. But you basically have to completely dismantle the phone and get each piece dry independently (with a hairdryer or similar), because even the tiniest bit of damp left inside will cause a short circuit if turned on again.

Take it apart, dry it out, put it back together. If it doesn't work then, it's fucked.

My daughter's mobile never recovered from being in the washing machine.

I took it apart but it didn't help. At least it was clean.

One of our techies dropped his phone down one of those Tardis-like (or probably turdis-like) green festival porta-bog things and actually stuck his hand i the goo to fish it out.

Dirty brute.

Try giving it some hair-dryer on the circuitboard.
Guarantee it's fucked, though.

Who on earth needs a phone in his pocket when he's going swimming?

I dropped my old phone in the loo once and it still worked afterwards. I had one of those rubber coated sporty ones though, which were semi-waterproof.

Anyway, it's as good a reason as any for getting a new phone, which is always great.

That is a question we have been asking. G-Teen forgot he had it in his pocket. Which is a proper teenager thing to do.

If I dropped my phone in the loo (especially the Tardis-like variety), it would be history. I wouldn't stick my hand in to fish it out, and I certainly wouldn't hold it next to my face, even if I cleaned it off. I don't think a cellphone would survive boiling.

It's rarely about the phone though is it? All about the numbers on SIM card that have never been backed up.

Fair enough. I'm off to back up my SIM card now (which is even easier now that I have this spiffy new T-Mobile Wing).

Don't worry, I dropped it into the loo after flushing. Luckily it was just resting on the bottom. I also dropped my keys in at the same time, and they went down a bit further. I had to reach into the bit just beyond the bit of the loo that you can't see in order to get them.
