For no particular reason, I'm reading about the Russian Revolution. Already well into Ten Days That Shook The World, which is a rollicking good read, and I hear Morgan Phillip's Dispatches From The Russian Revolution is good too.

Any recommendations, views, opinions, etc.?

the james connolly bookshop in dublin not only still stocks some of lenin's pamphlets in their soviet-era edition but even a couple of stalin's.

sorry little to do with your query, just following on from the title!

Well, I'm going to read Morgan Phillips Price whether you guys like it or not.

On a similar commie tip I read an english language cuban newspaper a mate brought back from Havana the other day. It's got transcriptions of Castro's speeches, and he's a great speaker- lucid, powerful, stuff.

The rest of the newspaper is, unsurprisingly, extremely biased news coverage.

That'd be Granma right Derek? Yeah, it can be unreadably tedious at times, though its coverage of general Latin American affairs is pretty good, and not too ranting either I reckon. Certainly better than the coverage of the region in the English liberal broadsheets, which is pretty dreadful (they were even duped by the Venezuelan coup plotters).

Anyway, Connolly books in Dublin is a great shop - they're right friendly in there too. A guy I got chatting to in there when I was there a few months back was telling me how they got a lot of these American tourists enticed in there by its nationalistic 'God-bless-the-old-country' outward appearance, and then they go inside and start getting all jittery when they see the reams of leftie/commie stuff on the shelves.

We do like it Derek, do it - you know it makes sense.

There used to be a brilliant bookshop in Belfast's Winetavern St. called Just Books.
A most splendid establishment where you could get all the anarcho / syndicalist, hard-core leftie, nihilist, books on growing your own,and all sorts of cool pinko stuff. They also sold the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers and had a vegan cafe upstairs where they even let you take books and read 'em over a lovely cup of Sandinistan Nicaraguan Worker's Co-operative coffee and a flapjack.Top, top people indeed and on wet afternoons they'd stick a video on for the kids..hurrah! I saw The Long Good Friday there.Great days, and to think this was all going on in backwards Belfast in the late 70's / early 80's.The people who worked there often got envelopes with hidden razor-blades sent by loyalists or the N.F.

Now you'd have to go to Waterstones, or something.

Don't know what the point of all this is, but there you go.

There used to be a similar bookshop (but without the cafe or the video) in Oxford, called EOA Books, but a few years back it changed ownership, changed its name to The Inner Bookshop and now specialises in books on yoga, spiritualism, witchcraft and generally hippy type new age bollocks. They still stock some of the left stuff, but it's not obvious. Shame really.

Thanks Boris. I don't remember that bookshop from my time in Oxford, where is is?

Of course it's getting harder for bookshops like that to exist. Compendium Books in London closed recently, I guess these places have left-wing benefactors, but eventually they sell up and retire.

It was - and its ghostly remains still are - on the Cowley Road, quite close to The Plain. Right-hand side gowing away from the town centre.
