I just phoned Hammersmith Library to offer them a couple of boxes of books (all of which in excellent condition), apparently they don't have the room to take them or something, so it looks like Traid are gonna get them.

I have loads of ols books that I've read and will never read again, and I've always liked holding onto them... look at all the books I'VE read! But a lack of space and a realisation that I just don't need them means I should get rid of them....

How can I get rid of them to a worthy cause?

Maybe an old folks' home would take them.

I trade in nonkeepers at bookstores that sell used books. It does seem wrong to throw them out, doesn't it? I'm always shocked when I see boxes of them on the sidewalk with trash to be picked up.

Give them to Oxfam.

We made £11m last year from selling second-hand books. We've now opened up specialist book shops that are really successful.

Here's the thing... I'd like to give them directly to someone who'll read them, or hold them for someone to read... I don't really want to give them to someone to make money on (even if it is for charity).

Does that seem weird?

Yes, very.

There's an Oxfam book + record shop in Ealing, should you be passing...

Ah yes, down opposite the O'Neills type pub. It has some very scary albums in the window if I remember.

Jason - the books sell at very cheap prices, so you'd be doing Charidy a favour and people would still be getting your books much cheaper than new.

It's a win-win situation. (Except for waterstones).

Do people buy second hand books from Oxfam becuase they're cheap or becuase they want the money to go to charity?

If it's the former, why not borrow them from a library?

They'd probably prefer to buy them so they can say "I've always liked holding onto them... look at all the books I'VE read! "
