Anyone else read this yet? It seems that the reviews have been pretty mixed to say the least and the launch has been pretty low key.

I think the book's good, though I almost changed my opinion when I saw in the New Statesman that clown John King liked it too. All the old characters are there but they only come into fleeting contact with each other, which is quite neatly done. The dialogue is as sharp as ever and there are some clever scams. Above all, the book succeeds in portraying the change in drug culture since Trainspotting, moving from where the characters eat, drink and sleep drugs to one where they dip in and out of it. It's very telling that Begbie now takes cocaine. Plenty of humour there too.

The thing that puts me off buying it is that Irvine Welsh wrote one amazing novel and since then has written the same one again and again.

I am attempting Glue at the moment but am getting fed up with its predictability.

Exactly. Also, his short stories seem to repeat themes - drugs, bludgeonings, anal sex, surreality, repeat.

I hope this one's better than Glue, which I too found to be predictable and rather weak.

You missed out juvenile revenge fantasies, Reed.

I'd really take issue with Chippy saying that Trainspotting (presumably) is an amazing novel. A good editor could have turned it into an amazing novella. It's a very good novella padded out to novel length. And teh padding varies in quality from the pedestrian to the bloody awful. Happily, when writing the screenplay, Danny Boyle excised all the guff and was left with a very sharp short story and thereby a very good film.

As a novel I'd say that Marabou Stork Nightmares is better. The revenge fixation is still there, though, but I thought that stylistically it had some very good ideas.

I thoroughly enjoyed both Trainspotting and Filth, though I haven't read anything else by Irvine Welsh. Both could have been edited down a bit, but they were still very funny and very readable.

I haven't got round to reading Porno yet, but I did buy it for my dad's birthday recently, as he thought Trainspotting was an excellent read. I asked him if he was enjoying Porno, and said something to the effect of: "I've had to stop reading it when I'm on the train, because I'm laughing too much..." A ringing endorsement, then.

I thought this thread was going to be about Eddie Irvine's vacation in Wales.
