Seems unlikely that Italy were playing for penalties given their record.

UE's post about midget goalkeepers got me thinking... and last night at 4am it sounded really clever.

30 minutes of extra time just like they do it now.... then play 15 more minutes without goalkeepers whoever reaches 5 goals first or leads at 15 minutes wins.

It's the damn goalkeepers fault that people can't score right?

PG's got it exactly right.

Penalties are ace. There's nothing "inherently unfair" about them; both sides have an equal opportunity to demonstrate skill and composure, or lack thereof. It's an absorbing, unbearably tense, game within a game.

Corners would be far more of a "lottery".

And if you do the "lose a player every ten minutes" thing, what happens when there are no players left. I mean, does anyone really have an interest in seeing two footballers against two, having been playing for three hours or so, "running" around a full-size pitch? Do they fuck, comedy value aside.

How would corners be more of a lottery?

PKs suck. It's not that they're "unfair" or about luck, its that you're deciding the result of 120 minutes of football with something that isn't football. You might as well have a beer chugging contest. That take skill and nerve as well. It's not football.

You'll never get to two players a side. It'd be tricky for two teams of eight play out 10 minutes without a goal. But at six a side I reckon a goal is virtually guaranteed, unless both teams refuse to attack.

It should be trialed at some youth tournament.

How is taking a penalty "not football"?

Reed - there's a much greater element of chance and luck involved in scoring from a corner. particularly if there ar twenty two players in the box. it'd be like pinball.

thom - people said you'd never get to the point of goalies taking penalties, either. But you do, quite frequently. Two-a-side doesn't have to happen regularly, it just has to happen once to turn a major occasion into a horrendous, boring, three-or-four hour farce.

Perhaps corners are not the best way. Perhaps some other variant. Perhaps an indirect free kick from the top of the box. Something. But at least make it a team excercise.

PKs resemble one very small part of football, but football is about team, about shape, about tactics about a whole variety of skills that the various individuals possess and therefore must be put together to compliment each other. PKs are just five guys shooting from point blank and the keeper stopping it.

It's like deciding a baseball game with a Home Run Derby or a basketball game with a three-point contest.

Indeed, pks are taken when the team has failed to find a winner and it's up to the individuals to try to gain glory for the team.

Nothing wrong with them, not even when you team can't score a single one....

Exactly.

We can put people on the moon, but we can't replay a drawn World Cup final?

There's nothing wrong with using corner kicks as a decider, provided they are incurred during the game's run of play ie: during the 120 minutes of regulation plus extra time. The team that gains the most corner kicks wins. It's simple, encourages attacking play, and is an honest reflection of the winning team's dominance.

Nah, it'd encourage corner milking. You'd get players keeping the ball in the corner and trying to get a deflection much more than you currently do. It wouldn't be the last couple of minutes. Players would do it the whole game - if they can do something to make it more likely that they win a drawn game, while also making a draw more likely by keeping the ball in the corner, they'll do it.
