They still don't make sense, especially from a Portuguese point of view.

Portugal knocked Spain, England and Holland out of Euro 2004 to reach the final. In the World Cup they knocked out Holland and England, and went two rounds further than Spain to reach the semi-finals. Yet Portugal are ranked behind Spain, England and Holland.

Would the 5-1 in Munich have something to do with that though?

I can't understand why Portugal are so low though.

I think the rankings go back four years now, so the 5-1 doesn't count anymore.

Perhaps Germany and Portugal are suffering due to qualifying for tournaments as hosts, and therefore not racking up points in competitive matches.

that 5-1 result seems to have been the basis for the media to spout 5 years worth of pure unadulderated bullshit.

It kept Sven in a job four years longer than it should have done.

As opposed to corrupt, morally suspect bullshit?

Well it's a bit better, which is like saying it's not completely garbage but rather just needs to be recycled.

Huh?!?

What the hell have Guinea done to go up 27 places to number 24, one place above Ghana, who got through to the 2nd round of the World Cup?!?

Also, when I read that list, I can't help getting the voice of Peter Powell in my head, in full TOTP rundown mode: "At number 11, a non-mover: Nigeria..." etc.

Besides evilC's question about Guinea, what has Mexico not done to fall harder than the US, and to find itself below Denmark???

Mexico had a doping incident at the Confed Cup and tried to duck FIFA. Probably worth at least -10 points.

I'm not convinced the rankings posted by bryan originally are post-World Cup ones. Guinea being just ahead of Ghana would have felt right before the tournament (their respective records in group qualifying, then African Nations Cup Finals, were 8-2-3 and 7-3-3). But surely Ghana's two wins in Germany, against the Czechs and the USA, would have shot them up the table (I don't recall Guinea ever beating anyone outside of Africa).
