Like every ground in Spain (except Osasuna’s?) San Mamés had a minute’s silence in honour of the ex-PSOE councillor murdered by ETA on Friday. This was apparently the first one ever for someone not connected to the club. From what I heard on the radio it was spoiled somewhat by pro-ETA chants (from Herri Norte) but that the vast majority of the ground tried to respect the silence.

Valencia 2-2 Depor. Great start for Valencia but then conceded two before half time that looked soft at the time anyway. Loads of possession in the second half but hardly a chance created, poor. Arizmendi was one of our best players, says it all.

PS Paella Valenciana hasn’t a sea creature in sight, it’s chicken and rabbit plus it’s just “Mestalla” (no la, el or the).

Senyor, at least in my experience the Barcelona version of paella usually includes shellfish.

Marca have a clip of the San Mames incident on their home page (unfortunately a direct link isn't possible), and the pro-ETA chants (and brandishing of signs) are very prominent. In fact, I can't think of a more conclusively foiled silence in recent times.

"The Barcelona version of paella" is like "the London version of haggis", though.

It's a Valencia thing; you wouldn't understand.

Indeed, but it was a FC Barcelona-based simile . . .

Sigh.

To try to get things back on track, can anyone recall such a turbulent period at the top of one of Europe's major leagues? A graph of the gap between Real Madrid and Barcelona over the last six weeks or so looks like a particularly vicious roller coaster.

Once again I don't think that Athletic Bilbao are going to be quite bad enough to be relegated this season, more's the pity.

Still, Paris SG might provide some happy consolation instead.
