Brown seems to be doing this sort of thing still more so than Blair. Ridiculous.

10 Downing Street has just issued a statement on Mourinho according to BBC News 24.

I shit you not.

Is Mourinho going to get a full state escort to No.10, where he will ceremoniously get to kick Brown in the 'nads?

Apologies if this has been covered but i haven't had time to read all the threads, if they hadn't won both games last week Mourinho would be a favourite for the England job right about now, no?

And if they end up not qualfying (unlikely, I know) he still could be in the frame.

EDIT : Actually, even if they do qualify.

This thing about him paying tribute... isn't it possible that someone just asked him, and he said something complimentary, which then got spun out to a "tribute"?

Scolari's position is safe as Portugal's Head Coach isn't it? This spat he had with an opposition player last week isn't going to land him in too much trouble is it?

However, Schoey's been given the vote of confidence by the board at Lincoln, so Jose might have timed his departure perfectly!

I just assumed the low attendance was a function of people saving their money for the matches with the other teams that weren't 'the minnows of their group'.
No, they were saving their money for the other matches that they have a chance of winning.

hamann - the phrase "issued a statement" suggests his press secretary sent an email with some prepared quotes on mourinho; i.e. number 10 took the initiative to comment.

How many marginals in that part of london?
One less after that needless contribution from Mr Brown.

I can't say I'm sorry to see Mourinho go. It's not anything about him in particular, but the fact that he had the occasional interesting thing to say encouraged the press to saturate the papers on a daily basis with absolutely everything out of his mouth. In fairness, the same applies to Wenger, Benitez and Ferguson. It's just tiresome. At least someboy like Del Bosque would be limited by the language barrier.

Ugo Boss are releasing a commemorative aftershave.

Meanwhile, sometime stand-in skipper Frump Lumplard has issued a categoric denial of any future player-manager role from his Catalan bolthole.

"Yo no soy Mourinho, soy capitan"

So, the Brown statement, issued through a spokesperson:

"He's made a significant contribution to British football in a short period of time and he's also one of the great characters of the game."

Badly off-key, I'm afraid. First point, it's not the PM's job to make uninvited comments on who is or isn't a "character". Second, there's no such thing as "British" football, and nobody in any part of Britain wants any such thing.

Please let Chelsea be challenging for the championship this season. Please.

Who cares what Brown says? It was a perfectly reasonable statement in the context of a massive news story. 2 sentences by his press secretary. Have you any idea how much shit #10 comments on every day? It's not like he said Jose was the People's Princess or anything.

Jose will obviously go to Italy. He and italian football are made for each other, and frankly they're welcome to each other. Dalliance must be bursting with excitement.
