Well, I had honestly never expected ORANGE! HAPPY!! FOOTBALL!!! to be quite so much of a hit, but of course the decision to throw in your lot with the Squirrel Nation is only to be respected - nay, admired. However, sorry to disappoint your twitching cute-ometer, but Mito's mascot is actually a horned green dragon called - with a kind of ghastly inevitability - Holly-kun. Who the two large red fish might be in the photo below I am unable to advise.

Holly-kun and friends

Ah, disapointing (though the fish are ok).

On their new year's card, there is a bear/mouse/popcorn figure next to the badge. No horse or fish, perhaps a new signing?

Good Lord, you're right. Who can the little fellow possibly be? I shall do some urgently-needed research into the matter.

My spies tell me that the additional character on the Mito New Year card is in fact a Chinese zodiac thing, what with 2008 being the Year of the Rat. And in a separate move, evidently there has been some talk of having a second mascot alongside Holly-kun. Rest assured, I'll keep you posted.

The Japanese national team play in Tokyo against Chile and Bosnia Herzegovina on 26 and 30 January, the first matches overseen by Takeshi Okada since he returned as coach following Ivica Osim's stroke in the autumn of last year.

While Celtic's new signing Koki Mizuno is squeezed out by Atsuto Uchida of Kashima Antlers, one surprise aspect of Okada's squad is that he is continuing to pick a group of (now mostly ex-) JEF United players collectively known as Osim's Children. People like striker Seiichiro Maki and midfield duo Satoru Yamagishi and Naotake Hanyu are regarded as having been selected by Osim (who was coach at JEF before taking the national team job) more on the basis that they have a thorough understanding of his tactical approach than because they're good enough to play for Japan, so why they're still on the scene is a puzzle.

Former Nagoya Grampus midfielder Keisuke Honda became the latest Japanese player to appear in Holland's top flight on Wednesday. Honda made his Eredivisie debut for struggling VVV Venlo and played the full ninety minutes in their 5-1 defeat against SC Heerenveen, thus following in the footsteps of compatriots Sota Hirayama at Heracles and most famously Feyenoord's Shinji Ono.

 -

How Venlo can you go?

A few new J-League shirts - from Ventforet Kofu, Shimizu S-Pulse and Oita Trinita - a must-have Kawasaki Frontale t-shirt and some more slogans.

 -

 -

Oita Trinita 2008 sans sponsor; the blue one is their home kit

 -

Shimizu S-Pulse home kit

 -
Star forward Hulk on a charmer of a Kawasaki Frontale t-shirt

In the meantime, Yokohama FC's slogan following relegation to J2 at the end of last year is GO ON FOREVER FROM THE 10TH ANNIVERSARY; S-Pulse plump for a dull WE BELIEVE; and the Flaming Pinks of Cerezo Osaka offer the undeniable logic of J2 VICTORY = J1 RETURN. Avispa Fukuoka, who have kept on Pierre Littbarski and Ian Crook as their coaching team despite a disappointing 2007 in which they finished midway in J2, had as their motto last year SUFFER FOR SUCCESS.

Those sleeves re-define "lame" when it comes to kit design.

Interesting characters for their sponsor, though; it ain't Kanji.

Actually, they are kanji; just in a more traditional style than one might normally expect to see. The club are maintaining their relationship with a real estate company called Iida Sangyo, rather than go with Yamaha as shirt sponsor.

Some Kashima Antlers and Oita Trinita bits and pieces...

 -

2007 double winners' Kashima's new home shirt. I quite like this one, actually

 -

Oita's 2008 slogan, new players and Neetan the cold, cold-hearted mascot

The Hulk shirt? Is that a serious enquiry, Tom?

I love that Ventforet Kofu shirt. Also like the JEF shirt (though not those bloody Kappa logos on the shirts).

Kashima goes Flamengo, but while Nike for once get the sleeves right, they still don't understand that hoops are not the same as horizontal boxes that don't even go all the way to the side seam.

You would have thought that they would make that change when Zico was still there, though.
