Not really.

I have somewhat of a soft spot for the Fire, going back to when they were dominated by Poles, but it has been harder to keep that burning lately.

My dream is all about Racing New York.

I should have typed "first signing: Thierry Henry", now I think about it.

I had the exact same thought, which is a bit scary (as is Henry right now).

Why's the fondness for the Fire waning, ursus, despite all my promotional efforts?

Fewer/no Poles; leaving the city; Blanco (especially his Club America roots); screwing up the shirts; general difficulty of following MLS from this distance; likely delusional hope that the Vancouver Whitecaps (my NASL team) will one day make it back to the big time.

We have a Pole again now, Ursus. Blanco might not be a great role model, but he's magic on the ball. The new stadium is brilliant, and it's really not far from the city at all (technically one end of it is only a couple of blocks from the city limits). Buy one of our Section 8 city flag jerseys instead of the Best Buy abomination. Get a $20 season pass to MLS Net and watch the games any time. And yes, I'm afraid the Whitecaps are not going to be in MLS any time soon.

Sold?

Most likely bullshit, as it was on MLS rumors, but here's an email purporting to tell the tale of the Seattle naming saga:
quote:
Hello,

Here's the way this all went down over the last month.

Approximately one month ago Seattle owners submitted the names "Seattle Sounders" and "Inter Seattle" to MLS headquarters for consideration.

MLS rejected both names. They said "Seattle Sounders" was dated and also wanted more control over the brand rather than having 'a bunch of history that is public domain.' [editor's note: Adrian Hanauer never trademarked the Sounders name, and the law goes, a trademark even if registered in and used must be defended when challenged, which it wasn't. The lack of this no doubt put the Sounders brand in the public domain for most purposes MLS would want. Since MLS is single-entity it must own all the brands of all of its clubs even though the clubs have almost total autonomy in how they make use of their brand]. They rejected "Inter Seattle" because they were still feeling some of the backlash from the "Real Salt Lake" naming [editor's note: and likely remembering their experience with Inter Toronto FC as well as Arsenal Colorado FC]. They felt it was copying too much (Inter Milan).

Seattle MLS had been presented with "Alliance" by MLS early in the naming process (December). It remains the choice of MLS brass. "Republic" is Drew Carey's entry. It harkens to Barcelona and their historical"Republica" movement.

Once "Sounders" and "Inter" were rejected by the league, Seattle MLS was left with "Alliance" and "Republic." [editors note: And Alliance is a name that was originally goign to be used for Salt Lake City. One thing about MLS is they keep trying. When the Nike name for Washington DC's MLS club was given to DC United's Kevin Payne, it was rejected, "Washington Spies" just was not good enough for him, and neither was "Washington Revolution" but that one WAS good enough to pass the muster of Robert Kraft who operates the New England Revolution.] The owners will not publicly say anything against MLS offices, but they were pretty disappointed that "Sounders" wasn't even allowed to be a choice for fans to vote on. They asked for "Seattle FC" to be included instead, and got league approval for that on around March 10th. Then all three copyrights were filed on March 14th.

I am writing this because while I am no sympathizer of the Seattle owners and the way they have handled the naming process, I was really surprised that Don Garber's recent comments about not using Sounders weren't clearer. He knows, the league brass know, and of course Seattle MLS owners know that they wanted "Sounders" on the ballot.

It is MLS that "killed" the Sounders.

Now the owners are secretly hopeful that "Seattle FC" wins the vote next week so that "Sounders" can be used by fans as an unofficial nickname and eventually be worked into merchandise over the next few years.

[editor's note: Because ultimately the league can not stop fans from calling Seattle FC the Sounders even if they don't want to make that nickname official]

Weirdly, the AP has put out two different versions of the Beckham story, with three different words. Spot the (quite important) difference.

On ESPN.

quote:
David Beckham has an option to buy the L.A. Galaxy when his five-year Los Angeles Galaxy contract expires after the 2011 season, according to a CBS "60 Minutes" profile scheduled to air Sunday.
On Sports Illustrated:

quote:
David Beckham has an option to buy an MLS franchise when his five-year Los Angeles Galaxy contract expires after the 2011 season, according to a CBS 60 Minutes profile scheduled to air Sunday.

I can see why they wouldn't want to use a name that's fallen into the public domain. I mean, somebody could start a Seattle Sounders Kiddie-Porn and Gun Emporium and there's not much they could do about it.

Washington Spies would have been a good name. The logo possibilites alone are fantastic.

There's precident for a team's name to not be the team's name. The old Washington Senators were actually supposed to be called the Washington Nationals, but for whatever reason everyone called them the Senators. Then, in the late 40s or 50s (I forget) the name officially changed. The second coming in the 1960s were always just the Senators. And nobody seems to be calling new Washington Nationals the Senators.

I guess it's possible that they amended the earlier story to read "an MLS franchise" (btw, "an" MLS franchise? Should be "a MLS franchise," right?) and put a clarification note explaining the change that SI left out.

There was no clarification of why one was different from the other (sorry, I've lost the links). It's annoying me not knowing which is correct.

I believe either is acceptable. It's a question of style.
