*HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO US!*
Hey hey, gift-wrapped kitty cats! We can hardly believe it ourselves, but the next Stay Beautiful is our SEVENTH BIRTHDAY PARTY! An occasion not to be missed: the SB birthday party is always a riot of fun. It's on SATURDAY 2nd FEBRUARY, our live band will be the superb sythpop trio MATINEE CLUB ( http://www.matineeclub.co.uk / http://www.myspace.com/matineeclub ) who, in their previous incarnation as The Modern, were the first live band we ever had at The Purple Turtle. We'll be giving away 100% illegal CD-Rs of STAY BEAUTIFUL'S GREATEST HITS (now into its third edition, and this time focusing on artists who have performed or guest-DJed at Stay Beautiful over the years), the playlist will reflect the club's favourite tunes over those seven years, we'll probably show the inevitable MARILYN MONROE movie on the big screen, and there will be CAKES and BALLOONS and everything else you'd expect at a birthday party!

*CHEAP BOOZE, FREE BOOZE!*
Drinks at the Purple Turtle are, you'll be glad to hear, served at pretty reasonable, pubby prices anyway (certainly compared to one or two of our previous homes). And, to set you on your way towards alcoholic oblivion, the Purple Turtle serves a special JESUS JUICE cocktail exclusively at Stay Beautiful - a delicious and potentially head-fvcking blend of vodka, Archers, cranberry, lemonade and fresh lime - at £8.50 per pitcher ALL NIGHT (a wide variety of other cocktails will be served at a tenner per pitcher). Furthermore, as aficionados of messy vodka-guzzling will be aware, Stay Beautiful has a somewhat notorious tradition called the WATERING CAN SONG...

*IF THEY WERE ME, IF THEY WERE ME, AND I WAS YOU...*
...and this month's Watering Can Song is, somewhat inevitably, "HAPPY BIRTHDAY" by ALTERED IMAGES, so when you hear that plinky-plinky xylophone, you know it's time to get wet!

*ADMISSION PRICES*
Regular admission is £7 (i.e. if you can‘t even be bothered to pick up a flyer, bring some sort of concessionary ID, or wear an SB badge). However, for very early birds, it's just £4 BEFORE 9.30pm, and if you come with a flyer (printable version: http://www.staybeautifulclub.co.uk/eflyer.htm), NUS/DSS card or a Stay Beautiful badge, it's just £5 ALL NIGHT!

*WHERE IT'S AT*
Stay Beautiful's current home is the PURPLE TURTLE ( http://www.purpleturtlebar.com ), 61-65 Crowndale Rd NW1 (for directions and transport information, see our 'Info' page: http://www.staybeautifulclub.co.uk/info.htm ), just 1 minute's walk from Mornington Crescent tube (and about 5 minutes from Camden Town.

*OPENING HOURS AND AGE POLICY*
Stay Beautiful opens at 9.00pm and closes at 3.00am. Please note that The Purple Turtle is an over-18s venue and ID MAY BE REQUIRED, so if you think you may look underage, please bring one of the following: an NUS card (with a credit card), a passport, or a driving license.

*FUTURE DATES*
Stay Beautiful happens on the FIRST SATURDAY of the month, so mark your diaries accordingly! (See http://www.staybeautifulclub.co.uk/info.htm for full dates.)

If you haven't done so already, SIGN UP TO THE STAY BEAUTIFUL MAILING LIST: staybeautifulclub@hotmail.co.uk

Is it always the first Saturday of the month? It would be a shame to be in London for a bit, and not come. I would come this week, but I've got nothing to wear.

So; is anyone else going? I've got two choices for tomorrow and while I'd rather go to SB I don't want to go and stand on my own and leave on my own. It's usually downhill from there.

Sometimes, it’s all about the omens. Rolling into London Bridge station, we saw a gang of girls dressed up to the nines in glitter and animal print, and whispered to each other, with a regretful sigh, “They ought to be going to Stay Beautiful”. Half an hour later, the same glamorous gang walked through the doors of The Purple Turtle, just five minutes after us. From that moment on, we knew that Stay Beautiful’s 7th Birthday Party was destined to be one of the all-time greats.

We started 20 mins late - sorry, but if you’d seen the way in which Simon and Jenna’s Brighton flat turned into a CD-burning and cake-baking production line, you’d understand - but by 10.30 we’d already hit capacity. The free CDs, by the way, concentrated on acts who have actually appeared at Stay Beautiful (whether live onstage or as guest DJs), and if there are any tracks you don’t recognise, just ask…

Matinee Club, officially launching their debut album, were bloody great, and it was fantastic to see all the Modernists in bunny ears showing their support. (And screaming like lust-crazed Durannies every time Nathan sang a bit, bless…)

The birthday theme was embodied by several little touches: the aforementioned CDs and pink-iced sponge cakes (which went down a treat), the inevitable Altered Images Watering Can Song, the numeric balloons we threw out onto the dancefloor, Marilyn Monroe’s Seven Year Itch on the big screen (see what we did there?), and in the apparel of the punters who turned up in home-made “Happy 7th Birthday” hats and, in one case, a home-made “Stay Beautiful 7” T-shirt.

Massive props also to the girls and guy who turned up as a Britney-esque cabin crew. I’d never have bothered playing “Toxic” if it wasn’t for you guys (but I enjoyed saying “This is brought to you by the Britney Spears Liberation Front). Other dedications were made to the goth couple in Yorkshire who weren’t allowed on a bus (“I Wanna Be Your Dog” and “Sex Dwarf”), and the Manics‘ “Judge Yrself” was played for “a friend of mine who buggered off 13 years ago yesterday and never came back, and anyone else who misses him.”

Jenna moved up from early-hours DJ to prime-time, and rocked the house (“Trouble” by Shampoo, in particular, raised delighted shrieks and whoops). All in all, it was just one of those Stay Beautiful nights where the atmosphere never dips, where everyone’s smiling, and you can’t imagine anywhere else you’d rather be. Lots of excited newcomers too, as well as a few faces who’ve been around for the full seven years…

Near the end, I got a bit carried away with the sense of occasion and made a speech about how SB took a chance that there was a whole community of people out there which didn’t have a name and didn’t have a focal point, and we provided that focal point, and seven years later you still keep coming back, and there really is the feel of a community, even if the only thing which unites us is a shared love of dressing up and getting drunk.

Which with no further ado, apart from reminding you that you can see photos at http://www.staybeautifulclub.co.uk/gallery.htm (major thanks to Mark Cooper for letting us borrow from his digital gallery again, because our Polaroids didn’t come out too well) and video clips at http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=staybeautifulclub, and that tickets for New Year’s Eve are on sale NOW (see website and Myspace for details), brings us to what we actually played…

We've toyed with the idea, at various times. Trouble is, we all have proper jobs and/or proper lives of some description, so a tour is kind of impossible now. We're up for a non-London one-off, though. Might do one in Brighton to test the water...

I'd imagine there'd be plenty of interest in that SR, did you have any plans about a venue?

I'm still investigating the local scene. The Engine Room on the seafront is a bit grubby but it's the right size and has roughly the right clientele, so I've thought about that. But I wanna shop around a bit. Any suggestions?

Hissing Fauna of this parish would probably be the best person to advise on this, but the Engine Rooms would certainly seem an obvious candidate, certainly to start off with.

Just out of interest, is there any type of clothing that is barred? I fancy coming to one of these, and dont really want to be out of place in my usual attire of jeans and shirt.

Incidentally, that whole setlist is fucking fantastic.

Well, we strongly urge people to dress up, make an effort, etc. Failing that, we're happy as long as people 'get' the spirit of the club, and aren't just 'randoms' off the street looking for a drink. They're the ones we always have trouble with.

How about the Hanbury Ballroom as a Brighton venue?

It's small (perhaps too small) and beautiful.

I still haven't been there, but someone recommended it to me last night in connection with another event I'm planning to put on, so I ought to check it out...
