I don't have full web access at work (due to a clunky firewall) and so have been been transferring data using floppies. I've just had an error message that a PC can't read a floppy because it's either "unformatted" or "formatted for a Mac". Even though I have used the same disk before and haven't been near a Mac in years.

Is the disk knackered, or the PC? Should I just stop using floppies?

Thanks in advance.

The answer is yes, to one of your comments.

Either the floppy disk is corrupter (most likely) or the floppy drive is knackered (less likely but possible) OR someone has hilariously formatted your disc for you in a mac (unlikelier still, but hey it could happen).

You might get somewhere using one of the myriad of disk recovery programs out there. Or you might not... For what it's worth, I'd have thought getting a USB pen drive thing would be well worth it. A small is dead cheap now, less than £10 probably, and they make life so much easier.

I suspect, I've just not told you anything new at all.

It's probably knackered. Could you use a cheapo USB disk? They're much more convenient than floppies.

Thanks chaps. Will get one of those USB devices you mention. I'd heard of them, but didn't realise they were so cheap.

I don't know if you go to many conferences in your line of work, Bill, but they're often given out as freebies at the ones I go to.

If your techies at work are any good, you might find out that your USB ports are disabled for flash drives.

Thanks BLH. That shouldn't be a problem, as I use a PC separate to the IT guys' network. We bought it for union use. I suppose ideally we should just install broadband, but is that possible without a dedicated phone line?

It may be possible if it has a wireless card.

Amazon has a decent range of USB pens, if you're still looking.

Everyone is on the money here, a USB memory stick is the business. Best purchase per money spent I've had in the last 2 years.

Aye. I bought a 128MB keyring-USB-flash-memory-thingy for about £10 in Dixons.

It also allows you to save on bandwidth at home by downloading onto it at work.

I don't wear mine on a rope around my neck though--that's where I draw the line.
