...excitement is reaching new highs on the various meteo geeks forums, models and ensembles are aligning to predict a major snowstorm to hit the UK by thursday and it will be spread on a number of days with plunging temperatures and bitter easterly winds, a "Beast from the East" in short. Nothing definite, but bare that in mind if you have any plans for travel (like I do...).

Well, nobody will be more surprised by that than the guys who write the BBC's monthly UK weather outlook.

It has to be said that forecasting weather beyond 3/4 days is more akin to voodoo than science, chaotic systems are just that...The term the geeks use for period beyond "T96" is FI, fantasy island...Which means that by sunday the picture should be a lot clearer.

Fucking hell. Why is it always bloody Leicester at the New Year? It's the coldest game of all. And no old Members' Bar to escape into to watch the match from its sticky, warm and cloying interior.

The latest from the models is that uncertaintity is the name of the game.

The snow event will almost certainly start by late wednesday night and be over by thursday but the synoptics are upgrading all the time, friday might also see a snow event, possibly a pretty bad one due to masses of mild air colliding against the Scandinavian high which is moving further and further south. The mild was due to return on saturday but the Atlantic is not its usual self so a longuer spell of cold might be possible. Right now the model are struggling as this winter seems to be following pretty different patterns that recent winters and as models are programmed to take into account the evolution of our climate, a sudden return to earlier 20th century synoptics might be a step to far for a correct modelisation. The december cold spell was due to last a few days and we know what happend...

It's looking pretty nasty on the continent as well, MeteoFrance issuing severe weather alerts up until next week. I'm due to fly on saturday to Geneva, let's see if it will happen...

Well, it certainly did not turn out to be as widespread as hoped but some places have enjoyed some good snow today, the north-east coast of the UK in particular. However the current story is in Ireland, also on the north-east coast, they are taking a hammering of what I read on the forum, 7 inches in Belfast and even more in the countryside. Even Dublin is getting it I think. That was not predicted.

Next week looks to be a very active week as well, the Scottish ski station should be able to open. The ski-tow in Weardale, Cumbria is opening tommorrow morning...

Anyway, the Jet looks like it's buggering off to the south of the British Isles for the time-being so you can forget about "mild zonality" for the foreseable future. This is shaping up to be a pretty good winter.

I can confirm that It's completely snowtatsic here.
Still falling heavily.

So heavily in fact that Mrs. Tomato is marooned at her friends house.

At least I have the truly atrocious Best movie to laugh at.

You make it sound like this is a good thing. Snow can fuck off. As can every other weather phenomenon that might cause any football matches to be postponed.

Plus you are having thunderstorms of snow I gather, chap on the forum mentions claps of thunder.

Rural areas in Co Down will be pretty quiet, it's even more intense there...

Yeah, that's true about the thunder.

Weird.

At this rate it'll be about 6 feet deep.
