It's a proper noun.

Whipsnade

I still don't get the Monkey/Freedom bit. Care to help me out? I get an anagram of "whisper a dance" (ie whipsnade race), the Downs collection bit, but not how the rest gets rid of that extra race.

Careless whisper gets rid of the extra letters, and I imagine that Whipsnade is a collection of animals that includes monkeys but not much, for the animals at least, freedom.

Excellent clue, I reckon.

Yes: very nice one indeed. I was too blinded by "careless", convinced it signalled an anagram.

Did anyone get "Dogtooth" in yesterday's G**rd**n? Foxed me completely, for some reason.

Everything from the word "downs" onward is the definition part. A zoo can be defined as a collection that features samples ("examples" would be better, but "samples" is close enough and is in keeping with the music theme) of monkeys and in which the exhibits are kept in captivity - that is, the collection has no "freedom". I was just very lucky to be able to use the titles of two more George Michael songs to express this.

"Careless" indicates that the letters CARE are to be omitted from the anagram ("mix") of "whisper a dance".

I thought it all fitted together wonderfully well, but I can see how the misdirection in the clue caused problems.

I have a candidate, but I'm not sure how it fits.
