I think it's like "sped".

It's one of my favorite British-isms because the School of Divinity here is known as the "Div School". If only they knew...

Apparently,

Divvy...a person who is a bit of a waster, or is unemployed. Comes from the dole, 1950s Unemployment Dividend i.e. dole to the unemployed. A shorter version of this is the word Divv, which also means the same thing.

I think you should call them all "people", but give a special symbol or something for about 10% of them, and emphasise that these are "Britons", like the BBC does when it's reporting these kinds of things ("It is reported that 4 Britons are among 43 people trapped inside a hospital complex in Iraq ...")
