So, here we go.

Following a ruling, or rather a non-ruling, by the Electoral Commission, we are not going to be able to stand as "Respect" candidates in May.

Socialist Worker explains why.

I quite like the new logo

It's more self-explanatory than "respect", isn't it?

TonTon - the bits of the coverage I remember about the formation of respect (what - five years ago or therabouts) made much of it being a left list with a sigificant ethnic (particularly Muslim) backing. Now was this just the Nick Cohen view of the world or was there truth to it? And is the ethnic/muslim thing still a major part of Respect (if indeed it ever was) or has the party now become more of a traditional alternative left party - say, of the type Scargill tried to form a couple of elections back?

Sorry if this sounds ignorant.

I'm buggered if I can get the logo on here, no matter how I try. Darn.

It's a more traditional name, certainly. As Rees says in the article I linked to, it's intended to match up with other currents in Europe.

There is still an orientation towards Muslims, yes, and a firm stand against Islamophobia. There is still a significant proprtion of the membership from a Muslim background.

Scargill's Socialist Labour Party claims still to exist, although sightings are more than rare.

Who knows what is to come? Currently, the only organised current within Respect is the SWP, with one tiny party also joining in, and a number of individuals such as me who have no other alignment. As it stands, there's not a long-term viability there.

What's needed is more of a realignment. A party of the Left here could pull together 30,000 or so people relatively straightforwardly, I think. And that would be a good start. But too many of those people either won't work together, or won't leave the Labour party.

What's your policy on speed bumps?
Personally, I don't take speed any more, but when I did, I much preferred just having the lot at the start of the night, rather than periodic small bumps throughout. That way, you never really got off your tits properly, but you just couldn't sleep. My way, you'd get proper shedded, and still be asleep by 3am.

We are in favour of a 20mph speed limit throughout London. Nothing specific about speed bumps though.

I'm gutted to find that we're against bendy buses.

Left List is actually a much better name than Respect (which has always carried awful "trying to be down with da yoot" connotations). You might have inadvertently been done a favour there TT.

How strict is the Left List about party discipline, TonTon? If you were to stake out a maverick position on bendy buses, would you be tolerated as an eccentric or thrown into the outer darkness?

I love 'em, Hof. Genuinely. But don't tell anyone, because like I said, we're against them. Booo for bendy buses.

I'd be purged, AG, and rightly so - we can't have that kind of ill-discipline.

Actually, I am stunned that anyone gives a fuck about how long buses are.

Are they doing any experiments with alternative fuels in London buses?

I ask cos when I lived in Toulouse in 1998 they had them running on natural gas and other fuels.

That's a whole 10 years ago. In case anybody had trouble calculating.
