Has this been done before?

On Virgin Media, my subscription gives me some TV on Demand. Anyhoo I've been watching Band of Brothers (having played various WW2 shoot em ups on the 360 and enjoyed the scenario).

Up to about episode 7, they're very good aren't they. Kind of like a history lesson from the front line.

What say ye?

They are fantastic, no doubt. Great television.

I'm not sure we've had a distinct thread, but probably we did.

Brilliantly shot, like the first 40 minutes of Saving Private Ryan until the plot kicks in. Simon Pegg was in one of the episodes wasn't he?

I don't know but my ex-bass player was an extra as a German soldier in it which meant he had a bowl haircut with shaved back and sides for a month. In a heavy metal band.

I have always been against it since

B of B's is top stuff as far as I'm concerned. Lots more Brit actors in it and I recall Simon Pegg being in one of the early episodes, serving some sort of court marshall papers to Winters when they were training in England (not that I've watched it much).

Regularly go biking past a couple of the shoot locations near Welwyn Garden City. One scene is the nightime ambush of some germans under a railway bridge after the D-Day drop. Even though its fiction I still find myself looking for bullet holes in the wall and cartridge cases when I'm there...

Winters is a god, I had a savage man-crush on him when watching it.

Simon Pegg played 1st Sgt William Evans, who was in the plane that is graphically shown catching fire in midair, incinerating the paratroopers and crashing in a field on the drop on D-Day in episode 2 - it was the company headquarters plane and so they lost the chain of command on day one.

The best bits are really the interviews with the actual men. You start to guess who some of them are (it's obvious who Winters is, and it's not too hard to guess who some of the others are) but not knowing who is going to make it all the way through adds to things - even after the war finishes people are still being killed by accident or design.

The plot of Saving Private Ryan is partly lifted from the book, in that one of the paras in the company did lose all his brothers.

I didn't even realise Damian Lewis was British, his accent seemed that convincing to me. Some excellent episodes in this; particularly Bastogne in the winter and the early episodes in Normandy.

I found it really hard watching the interviews; I've always struggled when watching people remember their losses. I think it's important to remind people that these weren't fictional characters in a bloodless war, but it's not easy to watch.

Some of the actors have really impressive accents when you realize where they are from. Liebgott sports a fantastic bronx/ny jewish accent, but he's really from the UK as well.
