Irvine Welsh's seminal Trainspotting inaugurated the era of "heroin chic" in British literature. Is this phenomenon on the wane, or are books about junkies still fashionable?

I thought this was going to be a thread providing a reading list for members of Steps at a loose end.

Was there really an era of heroin chic in British literature? The rush of post-Trainspotting drug literature seemed to cover ecstasy and cocaine as much as heroin, as far as I could tell. I didn't read much of it, unless you count Will Self (which I wouldn't).

A related enquiry - has anyone read anything by Alexander Trocchi? Is he worth a go, and if so which books should I start with?
