Why is UEFA Group 1 so fucking hard? It's not fair on Jari Litmanen. Three good teams ahead of them! It's a bit imbalanced.

ganja and space coyote are right about group four. the rest of you are hopelessly misguided. You shouldn't look at this as a competition between one of Europe's smallest countries, and one of europe's biggest.

This is a competition between Roy Keane and patrick vieira, and he's made it to 28 without winning one.

why does anyone think he's going to start at the age of 29?

Because Richard Dunne, Gary Breen and Matt Holland are no match for Zinedine Zidane, Thierry Henry and Claude Makelele.

And if Keane does turn up for the France games, he'll need to play like he did in 2000, not 2004.

haha get with the times.

Gary breen and richard dunne haven't played for Ireland as first choice in quite a while, and matt holland has picked up no end since he no longer has the slightest weight of expectation resting on him.

goddamn it, it's like criticising England for picking Danny Mills and rio ferdinand or some equally unimportant players. Slagging off gary breen and Richie dunne is so 2002

If keane plays like 2003-2004 vieira will whinge like a bitch and get himself sent off through paranoia in one game, and be either be suspended or sulking or just be shit in all the others. Are Ireland supposed to quiver in fear or something?

This thread is a nice refuge for the non-Dutch/Czechs/Greeks/Portuguese.

Well, neither Ireland nor France are going to leave a lot of points to the rest of the group, so they should qualify outright. Ireland will be looking to avenge its elimination by the Swiss, and France still owes the israelis some payback from '94. Better tighten up in the far ends of the continent (and beyond) lest Keano and Co. risk getting Holland or the C.R. in the playoffs...

Interesting struggle looming ahead between Greece (darlings of the Euro04) and Turkey ('02 cinderellas). Something's got to give, the group is too even for #2 going through directly.

Belgium lucks out (great for them since the cup is next door), but Romania and Finland get the shaft (file report under "Stating the obvious", part XXVI).

Did Bergkamp quit the Oranje? That will spare him the rough train ride to Armenia...

PS: How is the fact that some groups only have 6 countries factored into the comparison of runner-ups? Points per game as opposed to total points, I presume?

I consider Israel equally strong to Ireland, and the Swiss not much weaker. Three-way battle for second spot.

I know.
Let's hear it for the "Ireland have more players at big clubs and only lost to Switzerland because of low humidity and all Irish player went training together during Euro 2004 and got much better" brigade.

Abedi is absolutely right, Israel is on par with the Swiss and the Irish. The French won't be too cocky either. It will be a lot tighter than most people think.

Do you mean as Germany is on par with Latvia, as England is on par with Turkey, as Italy is on par with Russia, or in some other way?

This is the first time ever that Ireland will embark on a qualification campaign without a) English clubs actively conspiring against us, b)the FAI accepting bribes from other countries or c) a long ball muppet at the helm. I can't wait.

Israel my arse. Israel were beaten by Slovenia, who were knocked out by Croatia, who were thrashed by England.
