Done. I'll meet you in the Mortimer Arms (pub on Tottenham Court Road on the right side as you head up from Oxford Street, almost opposite Lloyds Bank).

I'm working up the road - I might pop up brandishing the office copy that turned up yesterday. What sad gits we are.

OK. A small parochial one to start off: tellingly, Essex didn't have a single bowler with a first class average of under 30 last season.

Did Glamorgan have any under 40? Or any batsmen averaging over 30?

No, though they had a whopping five batsmen averaging more than 30.

Anyway, another fact that passed me by at the time: Hampshire used four wicketkeepers in one innings against Middlesex at the Rose Bowl last year

It IS like baseball. . .

Though it is so passe to focus on simple statistics like runs scored or allowed.

You need to adjust for "park effects" (where the match was played), point in the match, quality of opposition, etc.

So you get things like "Runs Created" and "PECOTA".

My copy has now been posted, Amazon tell me. You wait till I get stuck into it.

In the meantime, E10, they have a strange but true page. Anything good off there?

Today's fact: India's Ranji Trophy final - a two-innings five-day game - finished in a draw, but was won by Railways against Punjab by virtue of the fact that they had a first-innings lead (of 46). Even though they only managed to take four Punjab wickets in the second innings.

And the socialist realist in me thinks "Railways" is a great name for a cricket team. I wonder how "Call Centres" and "Sweatshop" got on.

Good choices this year. I'll be getting my copy as well. Over to amazon in a minute. Tubby, do you know if Mark Ramprakash has ever been one of the five? I think he deserves to be-he's been so consistent on the country circuit since the early 90s.

I'm pretty sure Ramprakash has been. Talking of whom, he has 79 first class centuries now. I wonder whether anyone after him will ever get 100 hundreds seeing that players retire earlier than before and play only 16 championship games a season- fewer if they play for England.

Pakistan have a Railways team as well, and they hold the record for the biggest ever winning margin in first class cricket- innings and 851 runs or something similar. Who was their skipper, Clive Lloyd? Did he not think they might have had enough runs and declared?

Anyway, shameful fact of the year is that the ECB have chucked the minor counties out of the C&G Trophy. There were hardly any shocks but it was a link with grassroots. Apparently first class counties will play a regional league format, with playoffs, because they don't get enough practice at the 50 over game. They get plenty at 45 overs- is that really so different?

Ramps is still pretty fit-he's only ever had minor injuries throughout his career (touch wood) and he is remarkably consistent, but last season he did get out a couple of times in the 90s which is going to cost his bid for one hundred hundreds. I think he is 36 now-so he'll need to go on for as long as Gooch did-probably another five years. Shame though that even if he does it, he'll only be remembered as the man who didn't fulfil his international potential. I've never seen him live, I went to see Surrey vs Hampshire two seasons ago for a day night match at the rosebowl where he and Warne were due to play, and it was washed out.

Anyway, that is a minor scandal about the C&G changes. There seemed to be more shocks recently as well! At least Ireland are in it aren't they?

Ireland and Scotland are both in it. It's bad about the minor counties because the ECB's done some good stuff to get them to play younger players, with the average age now 27. But what could be better for a young player than to have a crack at first class opposition in a one day match?

I saw Ramps play very well at the Oval in the second innings v Sri Lanka, really comfortable against Murali for hours and hours, taking every ball to protect Gough from him. It was wonderful stuff. Ranatunga in the end took Murali off, so that Ramps had to keep the strike at two ends instead of one. 21 more hundreds will be a tall order though.

Had Hick never played for England he might have had 150 hundreds by now instead of 128 (the same as Gooch).
