Heh. Great start for the youngster. England a bit shambolic here at 4-3.

Relax boys. England 30-3, their two most talented batsmen at the crease.

What could go wrong?

England 150-6 at lunch, with Patel showing some fine bowling.

Latest betting has NZ at Evens, England at 3/1, the draw at 11/4.

Isn't this supposed to be one of the best batting pitches in the world?

Well, England caught themselves after a hilarious start. I'm not so happy.

Kevin Pietersen has lost practically all trace of his South African accent. He sounds like a plummy, home counties toff. How long's he been in the country for? Has he had speech therapy?

Yes, G-man, but the "Ilford 2nd XI" were never going to bowl them out for 200. Those deadly seamers in full: one old hand (useful but not world-class), a kid, and an ODI 5th bowler. NZ will be delighted to have got away with that selection, and have the spinners in the 2nd innings.

The NZ top order is fragile, so I still think England are 50-50 for the win. The remarkable thing is that NZ are competing at all.

Fritz: the first-class stats this season suggest it is.

I can't work out if Strauss's change of hand-grip is the cause of his loss of form, or his response to it.

When Jimmy Anderson is good he's very good, when he's bad he's fucking awful.

Five wickets from Sidebottom has opened this test right up. A draw is the most unlikely outcome now.
